Divine Connection: Exploring the Spiritual Essence of Namaz

Namaz, or salat, is one of the five pillars of Islam, and it is considered to be the most important act of worship for Muslims. It is a way of connecting with Allah (God) and expressing one’s submission to His will.

Namaz is performed five times a day at prescribed times, and it involves a series of physical postures, recitations, and supplications.
Here, we will explore the meaning of Namaz, its history, its significance in Islam, and the different types of Namaz.

We will also discuss the scientific benefits of Namaz.

What Is Namaz/ Prayers/Salah?

Prayer/ Namaz is the soul of religion. Where there is no prayer, there can be no purification of the soul. The non-praying man is rightly considered to be a soulless man. Take prayer out of the world, and it is all over with religion because it is with prayer that man has the consciousness of God’s selfless love for humanity and inner sense of piety. Prayer is, therefore, the first, the highest, and the most solemn phenomenon and manifestation of religion.

How prayer is offered and the words which are recited in it explain the true nature of religion of which it is the expression of man’s contact with the Lord.

It implies that Islam lifts not only the soul to the spiritual height but also illuminates the body of man with the light of God-consciousness.

It aims at purifying both body and soul, for it finds no cleavage between them. Islam does not regard body and soul as two different entities opposed to each other, or body as the prison of the soul from which It yearns to secure freedom to soar to heavenly heights.

“The soul is an organ of the body which exploits it for physiological purposes, or body is an instrument of the soul” (Iqbal, Reconstruction of Religious Thought in Islam, p 105), and thus both need spiritual enlightenment.

Significance of Namaz in the Quran

Now that you know what salah is, let’s examine a few hadiths and verses from the Qur’an to emphasize its significance:

إِنَّنِىٓ أَنَا ٱللَّهُ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّآ أَنَا۠ فَٱعْبُدْنِى وَأَقِمِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ لِذِكْرِىٓ

“I am God; there is no god but Me. So worship Me and keep up the prayer so that you remember Me.”

[Surah Taha – 14]

“Who believe in the unseen, keep up the prayer, and give out of what We have provided for them;”

[Surah Al-Baqarah – 3]

“Keep up the prayer, pay the prescribed alms, and bow your heads [in worship] with those who bow theirs.” [Surah Al-Baqarah – 43]

“A man’s prayer in his house is equivalent to a single observance of prayer, his prayer in a tribal mosque is equivalent to twenty-five, his prayer in a mosque in which the Friday prayer is observed is equivalent to five hundred, his prayer in the Aqsa mosque is equivalent to fifty thousand, his prayer in my mosque is equivalent to fifty thousand, and his prayer in the sacred mosque (the Ka’ba) is equivalent to a hundred thousand.”
[Reference: Mishkat al-Masabih 752 In-book reference: Book 4, Hadith 180]

“Between a man and disbelief and paganism is the abandonment of Salah”

[Sahih Muslim]

“The head of the entire matter is Islam, its pillar is Salah, and the peak of its hump is jihad”

[Sunan Tirmidhi]

These verses make it clear that Namaz is a mandatory obligation for Muslims.

History of Namaz

History of Namaz

Since the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ’s time, when Salah was the first required act of devotion in Islam and there was no other form of worship at the time, its significance has been evident. In Makkah, it was mandated three years before the Hijra.

Had worship been mandatory on earth, Allah would have called the Prophet up to the skies to give Salah. Another name for it is Mi’raj. Along with Jibril (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet ﷺ journeyed to the sky on this night and saw numerous wonders there, including reaching a height that even his traveller could not reach.

The Prophet ﷺ accepted Salah as a unique gift for himself and his people during that discourse. Because prayer is the root of impurity and desire, Allah did not want it to be mandatory on earth, which is why the Prophet ﷺ was invited there.

The initial act of worship and the requirement to address the skies are the two greatest qualities of prayer. Mi’raj Day is a manifestation of its joy.
On the day after the Night Journey, the Prophet ﷺ started saying the required prayer. The Zuhr prayer, led by the angel Jibreel (may Allah be pleased with him), was the first required Salah that the Prophet ﷺ did. As a result, the Zuhr prayer is referred to as the opening prayer.

It is important to remember that the Prophet ﷺ did not offer his first prayers at dawn, or Fajr. This is because both the expectation of prayer and the task of engaging in it necessitate a declaration about its practice. This was not accomplished in the dawn prayer, and the worship leader doesn’t need to provide it before its declaration. It is necessary to carry out the statement, which is what Jibreel (May Allah be pleased with him) taught the Prophet about at the midday prayer.

Salah is a religious practice that includes a set of physical positions, readings, and prayers that must be done in a certain order. When Muslims say Salah, they face the Kaaba in Mecca, which is the greatest place in Islam. Standing, bowing, prostrating, and sitting are some of the poses. In the readings, lines from the Quran are read out loud in Arabic. The supplications are wishes and prayers made to Allah (SWT) to forget, guide, and bless people.

Meaning of Namaz/Salah in Islam

The meaning of Salah in Islam is very deep and has many parts. It’s a way to link with Allah, show that you agree with His will, and ask for His forgiveness. It helps you be more self-disciplined, clean your heart, and feel better mentally and emotionally.

Salah is good for your health because it lowers stress, boosts blood flow, and makes muscles and joints stronger. It also improves mental health by lowering worry, anxiety, and sadness and making it easier to concentrate and focus. In addition, Salah helps Muslims get to know each other better, bringing them together and making the community stronger.

For thousands of years, Muslims have been doing Salah every day, and it is still an important part of Islamic life today. Muslims bond with their faith and a group of other followers through this very personal and spiritual act. Salah is an important practice that improves physical, emotional, and social health, and the science benefits of it make that even clearer.

Performing Namaz/ Salah

It is hard to explain how to do salah. Muslims have to cover certain parts of their bodies with certain kinds of clothes, face Mecca before they start, and say phrases and verses from the Qur’an at certain times

The framework of daily salah prayers is mostly the same, but there are some big differences between them and other prayers that happen during important holidays like Eid ul-Adha. It is important to learn the right way to pray so that you can get the benefit of salah and make sure that Allah SWT understands your worship.

Namaz/Salah rules, tips, and interesting facts

Praying salah is a process that has to be done in a certain way and according to certain rules. For starters, five different prayers must be said every day. Five types of Namaz are performed at prescribed times:

Namaz TypeTime of Day
Fajr NamazPerformed at dawn
Zuhr NamazPerformed in the middle of the day
Asr NamazPerformed in the afternoon
Maghrib NamazPerformed after sunset
Isha NamazPerformed at night

There are several rakaat (units) in a salah prayer, and these are distributed throughout the day as follows:

PrayerNumber of RakatsTypes of Rakats
Fajr42 Sunnat, 2 Fard
Zuhar124 Sunnat, 4 Fard, 2 Sunnat, 2 Nafal
Asar84 Sunnat, 4 Fard
Maghrib73 Fard, 2 Sunnat, 2 Nafal
Isha174 Sunnat, 4 Fard, 2 Sunnat, 2 Nafal, 3 Wajib-ul-witar, 2 Nafal

Voluntary Namaz/ Salah (Nafil)

If a Muslim so chooses, he or she may provide voluntary units in the form of nafil prayers. While some choose to worship in groups at the neighbourhood mosque, others would rather pray at home or their place of employment. To make praying simpler, some adjustments are made for those who are travelling or living far from home.

Namaz-e Jumma/ Friday Prayers

The Friday prayer, or Jumaa Namaz as it is commonly known, is especially important. At the neighbourhood mosque, this prayer is offered in a congregation under the direction of an imam (leader).

  • Namaz-e Janaza/Mayyit: There are numerous other prayers in Islam, including Namaaz-e-Mayyit, which is said during the deceased’s janaaza funeral, and
  • Namaz-e Eidein: Namaaz-e-Eid, which is a prayer that is customarily said on the mornings of Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha. Before performing this prayer, all Muslims are required to donate fitrana to charity.
  • Namaz-e Taraweeh: Taraaweeh, an evening prayer conducted every evening throughout the holy month of Ramadan, is another significant prayer practice.
  • Namaz Facing Holy Ka’aba: Once more, Muslims offer all forms of prayer with their faces directed toward Mecca, the home of the Holy Ka’aba. A compass can be used to determine this position.
  • Salah and Mindfulness: The purpose of salah is to help Muslims be mindful of the significance of their religion and submission to their Creator, to guarantee that they continue to be devoted to and believe in Allah SWT, and to grow in taqwa, or closeness to Him.

Scientific Benefits of Namaz

There are many scientific benefits to Namaz, including:

  • Improved physical health: Namaz helps to reduce stress, improve blood circulation, and strengthen the muscles and joints.
  • Enhanced mental well-being: Namaz can help to reduce anxiety, depression, and stress. It can also improve focus and concentration.
  • Stronger social connections: Namaz brings Muslims together and strengthens the bonds of community.
  • Reduced crime rates: Studies have shown that countries with a high percentage of Muslims tend to have lower crime rates. This is often attributed to the positive effects of Namaz on individuals and society.

Amazing Facts and the Significance of Salah

Here are a few astounding details about Salah that you probably didn’t know, along with their significance:

  • It is one of the main methods for calling on Allah Ta’ala
  • It increases your Taqwa toward the Merciful Allah
  • Acquire Benefits in Akhirah
  • It facilitates communication with Allah
  • Defense against Shaytaan
  • Keep Yourself Away from Profanity
  • Salah Assists in Easing Our Concerns and Cares
  • Success in this world and the next requires Namaz

1. It is one of the main methods for calling onto Allah Ta'ala

You can communicate with Allah Ta’ala in any way you see fit, but the most important approach is via salah, which is a duty that Allah Ta’ala imposes on all of His people. Any invocation you repeat during or after salah is certain to be accepted by Allah more readily when done through prayer than when done on your own.

Allah says in the Qur’an:

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱسْتَعِينُوا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَٱلصَّلَوٰةِ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَ الصّٰبِرِیْنَ

“You who believe, seek help through steadfastness and prayer, for God is with the steadfast.” [Surah Al-Baqarah – 153]

2. It increases your Taqwa toward the Merciful Allah

Taqwa Muslims are watchful and circumspect in whatever they do, not because they dread punishment but rather because they are afraid of going against what Allah Ta’ala has commanded. Every move and step they take is accompanied with an awareness of Allah. As the following Qur’anic verse states, improving one’s Taqwa is one of the purposes of Salah.

Allah says in the Qur’an:

ذَٰلِكَ الْكِتَابُ لَا رَيْبَ ۛ فِيهِ ۛ هُدًى لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ

الَّذِينَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالْغَيْبِ وَيُقِيمُونَ الصَّلَاةَ وَمِمَّا رَزَقْنَاهُمْ يُنفِقُونَ

“This is the Scripture in which there is no doubt, containing guidance for those who are mindful of God, who believe in the unseen, keep up the prayer, and give out of what We have provided for them; [Surah Al-Baqarah – 2-3]

3. Acquire Benefits in Akhirah

One day in the hereafter, every Muslim will answer for their conduct. You will be held accountable for all of your actions during yaumul Qiyamah, or when you pass away, regardless of how good or awful your conduct were. But the true fruit of Salah will only become apparent in the hereafter when the Almighty Allah bestows his blessings upon the individual.

Allah says in the Qur’an:

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ وَأَقَامُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتَوُا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ لَهُمْ أَجْرُهُمْ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ وَلَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ

“Those who believe, do good deeds, keep up the prayer, and pay the prescribed alms will have their reward with their Lord: no fear for them, nor will they grieve.” [Surah Al-Baqarah – 277]

4. It facilitates communication with Allah

One benefit of prayer is that it keeps you in contact with Allah Ta’ala, the Almighty. Salah is your “phone” to connect with Allah and have direct communication with Him, just as you need a phone to contact a friend. We all need that connection to feel satisfied, at peace, and joyful, insha’Allah.

Allah says in the Qur’an:

“After performing the ritual prayer, continue to remember God- standing, sitting, and lying on your sides- and once you are safe, keep up regular prayer, for prayer is obligatory for the believers at prescribed times.” [Surah An-Nisa – 103]

5. Defense against Shaytaan

Shaytaan’s primary objective is to entice everyone into the depths of darkness and get us to sin as much as possible in order to veer away from the straight and narrow path. All of it may begin with the first temptation, and Shaytaan will deceive us into falling farther and more into the depths of ignorance and forgetfulness.

At the moment, it might be challenging to tell what is good and wrong until we own up to our mistakes and make an effort to better ourselves. Therefore, prayer is useful to make sure we continue on the correct road and don’t let deception fool us.

Allah says in the Qur’an:

“With intoxicants and gambling, Satan seeks only to incite enmity and hatred among you and to stop you from remembering God and prayer. Will you not give them up?” [Surah Al-Ma’idah – 91]

6. Keep Yourself Away from Profanity

Salah is important for preventing lewdness, which is all too common in the world we live in nowadays. Being raised as Muslims and being exposed to a variety of situations and people—particularly those residing in the West—will have an impact on our well-being, perspective, and comprehension of the world.

Not only that but if we do not have a strong enough faith to resist the world’s temptations, peer pressure from adolescents or young adults who lead hedonistic lives would undoubtedly persuade us to follow that route. Therefore, Muslims must seek shelter in Salah to protect themselves from all the lewdness that is prevalent in today’s world.

Allah says in the Qur’an:

“[Prophet], recite what has been revealed to you of the Scripture; keep up the prayer: prayer restrains outrageous and unacceptable behaviour. Remembering God is greater: God knows everything you are doing.” [Surah Al-‘Ankabut – 45]

7. Salah Assists in Easing Our Concerns and Cares

In addition to the psychological and spiritual advantages of salah, we must also consider the significance of salah from the perspective of our bodily well-being. Ghazal Kamran, a senior physiotherapist at the Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine Institute at Al Ain Hospital, did a study and came to the conclusion that offering five prayers a day will burn around 80 calories.

Salah “involves a continuous gentle muscle contraction and relaxation with perfect harmony and balance,” in addition to aiding in the burning of calories. It includes various isometric contraction and stretching routines. You may perform these easy and moderate workouts at any age or fitness level.

A cardiology consultant specialist from the University of Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC), Prof. Dr. Wan Azman Wan Ahmad, said that the equivalent of one “rakʿah,” or unit for a series of movements in prayer, is equal to thirty minutes of gentle exercise each day, as advised by medical professionals.

8. Success in this world and the next requires Namaz

The secret to a prosperous existence in this world and the next is to offer five times a day prayers. And a believer is nothing without prayer. By joining, bowing down and prostrating in front of their Lord, believers are asking ALLAH’s forgiveness for crimes committed and also his obedience for piety and good acts to go on to the hereafter.

Conclusion

Namaz is a pillar of Islam that is deeply rooted in the Quran and Sunnah. It is a practice that has been followed by Muslims for centuries, and it continues to be of immense importance in the lives of Muslims today. The scientific benefits of Namaz further underscore its importance as a practice that promotes physical and mental well-being. Namaz is not merely a religious obligation; it is a way of life that can bring about positive change in one’s individual and social life.
